Menkes Leadership: A Multigenerational Business

Menkes Developments Ltd. is a family-operated business with deep roots in the city of Toronto. The Company was established nearly 70 years ago by Murray Menkes, an entrepreneur, visionary and successful businessman, who initially wanted his business to be focused on building single-family homes that delivered outstanding quality and lasting value. Over the years, Menkes grew to creating entire mixed-use communities, becoming a fully integrated, multi-disciplinary real estate development company.

Today, carrying on the legacy of their late father, Menkes is led by Murray’s three sons Alan, Steven and Peter, and his grandsons Jared, Jason, Adam and Sean, who not only oversee the execution of the Company’s vast portfolio, but share a common commitment to shape the landscape of Toronto.

ALAN MENKES

President, High-Rise Residential
Alan Menkes is the President of the High Rise Residential Division of Menkes Developments a multi disciplined real estate company and leader in the development, construction, and management of high rise residential homes.The company founded in 1954 is primarily active in and around the Greater Toronto Area.

Since beginning his career with the company in 1976 he has been one of the key pioneers and innovators of the condominium lifestyle and has completed over 25,000 units in more than 70 buildings.

The company is regarded as one of the most trusted home builders with a strong reputation for quality and customer service excellence.

Under his leadership Alan has spearheaded a number of high profile projects including the Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences in Yorkville, Empress Walk the landmark Residential and Retail community in North York’s City Centre and Harbour Plaza a two million square foot Residential, Office and Retail development in the South core.

Currently Alan is overseeing the development of one of its largest developments to date, Sugar Wharf located on the East Bayfront. It will contain 5 Residential towers, a retail podium along with the new headquarters of the LCBO.

Alan has contributed to the building industry through his membership and involvement with the Building Industry and Land Association of Toronto. He was also a past recipient of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award (Ontario).

He currently serves on the Board of the Foundation of the University Health Network and has co-chaired a campaign to build a new rapid assessment center within the Emergency Department of the Toronto General Hospital. Previously Alan has served on the boards of the Baycrest Centre, North York General Hospital Foundation and the United Jewish Appeal, Real Estate Division.

STEVEN MENKES

President, Low-Rise Residential
Steven joined the Company in 1982, and today heads the Low-Rise Residential Division and oversees the Finance and Accounting functions. Under his leadership, the Low- Rise Division has developed over 10,000 homes in single family residential communities throughout the GTA including Somerset in Ajax, Walker Farm Estates in Newmarket and Millstone on the Park in Oakville.

Steven has financed many different types of real estate development and has extensive experience in complex real estate financing transactions.

Currently he is overseeing the development of several new communities across the GTA including: Lake & Town in Etobicoke, Winchester Estates in Oshawa; Mobilio in Vaughan; and a luxury development in Joshua Creek Oakville, which includes 48 single-family homes. He is also leading the development of NY Walk, an exciting upcoming community that will feature executive luxury townhomes in the North York.

Steven holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Finance and Accounting from Boston College.

He is supportive of several charitable institutions including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Peter joined the Company in 1982. Under Peter’s leadership, Menkes has developed and managed over 20 million square feet of office, industrial and retail space across the GTA.

Peter has led the development 4.4 million square feet of commercial class A office space including landmark buildings One York Street LEED® Platinum office tower (Sun Life Financial Tower), 25 York Street (Telus house), Procter & Gamble building, and Empress Walk Retail Entertainment Centre.

Under Peter's leadership the Company recently delivered 1.4 million square feet of new Class AAA office space, including the Waterfront Innovation Centre, a cutting-edge 400,000 square foot plus complex.

Peter is an active member of real estate industry associations including RealPac and NAIOP. He takes a keen interest in community affairs and has been involved in a number of organizations, including the Board of North York Hospital Foundation, the Board of Governors of the Technion University in Israel, the Chair of the Bathurst JCC Development Committee and is currently a Trustee of the University Health Network (UHN).

PETER MENKES

Jared is also leading the redevelopment of a mixed-use city centre within one of Canada’s largest new master-planned communities in Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). These projects combined known as Festival and Mobilio, will encompass 17 acres of parkland and over 20 condominium towers across 75 acres, serving a future population of more than 23,000 residents.

In addition to leading the Company’s High Rise Division, he also oversees Menkes Condo Rentals and Menres Property Management, a company responsible for the management of condominium projects and is wholly owned by Menkes but separately operated.

Currently he is managing the development of a number of exciting upcoming communities including: Glen Ashton Estates in Oakville, which includes 48 luxury homes; Mobilio in Vaughan which includes 397 townhomes; and NY Walk which will feature 34 luxury townhomes in North York.

He is a member of several local homebuilders’ associations and is an editorial contributor in various industry publications.

JASON MENKES

Executive Vice President, Commercial/Industrial
Jason joined the company in 2010. He manages a portfolio of over 4.5 million square feet of industrial space across the Greater Toronto Area, overseeing its leasing, asset management and property management. He is also responsible for growing the Company’s industrial portfolio through both existing asset acquisitions along with land development and construction. He also leads the Company’s solar energy initiative, having installed solar rooftop installations on many of the Company’s industrial buildings, amassing the largest privately-owned rooftop solar portfolio in the GTA.


Having recently overseen the acquisition, construction and stabilization of over one million square feet of new industrial space in Milton & Caledon, Jason is currently managing the development of an additional 750,000 square feet of industrial properties across Milton, Burlington and Whitby, Ontario.


Jason graduated from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University in 2006. He is an active member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR).
